What is Ring and Ride?

Essentially it is the freedom to get around independently which is a fundamental part of everyday life that most people often take for granted. But for a significant section of the community this freedom is often denied because not all can use or have great difficulty using conventional public transport services.

Ring and Ride is being established to help fill this gap by providing a fully accessible, door-to-door MPV service for people whose circumstances limit their personal mobility.

North Yorkshire County Council has provided funding for a new fully accessible MPV (Multi- Purpose Vehicle). A Mercedes vehicle conversion with increased roof height the MPV seats 6 plus the driver and a wheelchair user. It has easy access for passengers via sliding side doors and a tail lift on the back.

The concept behind the new service is that the volunteer driven vehicle will operate across Whitby and immediate surrounding area (Sleights, Ruswarp, Sandsend and Hawsker) up to a maximum radius of about 4 miles. The service will be demand responsive with passengers booking at least the day beforehand.

Who can use the Service?

If you are over 60 or registered disabled you will be eligible to use the service. If you do not fit into either of these categories but have a genuine transport need, try giving us a call to see if we can help.

How do I use Ring & Ride?

Telephone us, between 9.00am and 4.00pm weekdays, up to a week before and not later than the previous working day to book your seat.

What does it cost?

There is a flat journey fare based on a zoning system, you will be informed the cost of your journey when you book it.

You are welcome to bring a companion as long as you inform us at the time of booking your trip, they pay the same fare as yourself. There is no additional charge if you want to travel on the vehicle in a wheelchair.

In addition to the fare you pay there is an annual membership charge which can be given to the driver on your first journey.
